Kuroma Sweet Potato Shochu - 720ml
Kuroma is a floral and expressive, sweet potato shochu from Kagoshima, Japan.
Kagoshima Prefecture is in Japanâs southernmost island, where shochu-making is a centuries-old craft. The area is celebrated for its rich âblack cultureâ heritage, from black pork (kurobuta) and black vinegar (kurozu) to black sugar (kokutĆ) and sweet potato shochu crafted with black koji.
Established in 1870, Iwagawa Jozo has perfected the art of shochu-making over generations. Kuroma is distilled using black koji, locally grown sweet potatoes, and pure underground water drawn from the Shirasu Plateau, it is then aged slowly in traditional kame earthenware pots, unlocking the full depth and sweetness of the sweet potatoes. The result is a refined shochu with delicate fragrance and a smooth, mellow finish and layers of zesty citrus, crisp apple, rose, lychee, and honey. The palate is both deep and refreshing, with a good, clean acidity.
Enjoy neat, over ice, or diluted with a little cold or warm water, each method reveals a new characteristic of its bright, fruity aroma.
Pairing ideas - tempura prawns or vegetables, the crisp texture complements Kuromaâs gentle sweetness. Sashimi or seared tuna, especially fatty tuna or mackerel as the shochuâs acidity refreshes the palate. Sweet potato or pumpkin croquettes (korokke) echo the earthy base ingredient beautifully.
